Jesus staffs the border so our entry doesn’t depend on the quality of our human passport but rather by the One who stands at the gate. Liberal theologians are intent on demystifying Jesus and turning him into a well-travelled sage. They fashion themselves as lifeguards tasked with the responsibility of rescuing ignorant souls from the perilous ocean of intolerant religion. They promote their writings as the life preserver that will save us, when in reality; all they have done is toss us heavy millstones and asked us to hold on tight……
I find it interesting that while our postmodern culture encourages us to create our own purpose, we continue to be obsessed with what others think about it. We are intrigued by television shows that judge the talents of those who believe they were born to be the next American Idol but then cringe as their dreams are aborted by judges who consider them defective. When we talk about the “moral high ground,” we are talking about a ground on which none of us is completely competent to walk since we are all prone to Fall. In fact, clinging to the illusion that we can walk a perfect moral tightrope gets us into a lot of trouble when onlookers see us tumble into the crowd. It is the politician who repeatedly denies the illicit affair, or the sports star who goes to great legal lengths to preserve…..
The Christian church is under constant cultural attack while every other religious persuasion is given a free pass. We feel like we have been good citizens, yet the villagers relentlessly come at us with torches and pitchforks.
