Bargain Bin Spirituality
Aren’t you a bit curious why so many spirituality books crowd our bookstore shelves? These New Age books huddle together like patrons at a singles bar desperately seeking love. We see our lonely friends and neighbors, desperate for divine companionship, cruising these speakeasies in search of Mr. or Mrs. Right. Intoxicated by promising glances from across the room, they hook up with one, only to wake up the following day with a spiritual hangover and an emptied bank account.
If these New Age spirituality books were genuine, offering foolproof guidelines to happiness, purpose, and meaning, there wouldn’t be a household without a copy. Yet, what do we observe? A parade of self-help books briefly enjoying their fifteen minutes of fame before being unceremoniously discarded into a bargain bin alongside all the other spiritual pretenders. However, the one book that remains a perennial bestseller is the Bible. Doesn’t that suggest that Scripture holds the answers to life’s ultimate questions? While it’s easy to become infatuated with New Age romance, our deepest desire remains to be part of the greatest love story ever told.
