Easter Surprise
When the disciples traveled with Jesus, they were on a messiah high. However, as He drew closer to fulfilling His mission, His followers began to experience withdrawal. The disciples witnessed growing opposition to Jesus and wondered if His mission was failing. They couldn’t see that every step He took toward the cross brought Him closer to cosmic greatness.
Upon hearing His hard teachings, people walked away, and His followers abandoned Him at the cross. They couldn’t see that His fall from the popular heights was an elevation to the right hand of God. They feared that this rising Jewish star was burning out when, in fact, the Light of the World was just beginning to blaze. The Passion of Christ is remarkable because, despite apparent worldly failure, it is a success story of Biblical proportions.
Easter is the startling revelation that heavenly power is found in earthly weakness – a truth that should give us all hope. In a world where we often feel like failures, St. Paul assures us that when we boast about our weakness, Christ’s power rests on us. In a world saturated with evolutionary thought, it’s reassuring to know that the outcasts and misfits get the last WORD.
