I have had only one experience in my life where I distinctly heard God speak to me. My son was about 4 and his school was putting on their annual preschool Harvest Festival. I really wanted to be able to attend so I worked as hard as I could to complete all my tasks and free myself to get away from the hospital for that precious hour. I just wanted one little hour! Things were looking promising until I was suddenly called to attend an emergency delivery. A woman was giving birth to a baby who had been prenatally diagnosed with serious congenital anomalies, which would most likely prove fatal. The one glorious hour I hoped to spend with my son was quickly replaced by several hours of struggling to keep a baby alive and carefully guiding a family through the emotional minefield of death. As I drove home that evening, I was very angry because I had been denied the opportunity to spend one meager little hour with my son at his special event. All of a sudden, in the middle of my pity party, I heard an overwhelming voice come from the backseat of my car saying, “I NEEDED YOU THERE.” I was instantly humbled and broke down in tears. God had a higher calling for my life that day, and all I could see was inconvenience. My selfish anger was instantaneously exposed and my place in God’s story clarified. I wanted to go off script but God, seeing my ad-lib folly, whispered in from the wings, “I needed you there.” It appears that contrary to the “Jesus is my co-pilot” bumper sticker, He is in reality a backseat Driver.
