God created a perfect world by creating a space of order in the midst of the waters of chaos. Adam and Eve then placed a siphon in the waters and began to suck. Thinking they were drawing a divine bath they ended up drowning the planet in a devastating flood.
God told Adam and Eve that He would allow a certain amount of arboreal tolerance. They could eat from any tree but one. Unfortunately, they couldn’t see the forest for the trees and the Garden become a jungle. The control that they thought they could take from God became a lifetime of herding cats.
We all know that an untended yard always wins when not kept in check, and so it is with the waters of chaos. We can only tolerantly tread water for so long before we drown. Sadly, as we survey the cultural shoreline we see it littered with the bodies of those who have washed ashore because they were told to navigate the high seas with a compass that pointed only to themselves.
We have a choice, we can be drawn in by the postmodern siren song telling us that, “the water’s fine,'” or we can look to Jesus and declare, “Land Ho!”
