In a previous blog, I suggested that the source of our societal dysfunction is the original sin of trying to be God. I pointed out that the divine spark that New Ager’s tell us is found within has become an arsonist that has set our lives on fire. Sadly, we look on as it burns because we are just grateful to feel a little warmth in a world that has left us cold. While it may be appealing to warm ourselves by a divine spark, we all too often feed the flames with the highly combustable molotov cocktail of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll, and then watch helplessly as our lives burn out of control.
Unfortunately, when we offer a Jesus fire-brigade to those whose lives are engulfed in flames they get all steamed up because they don’t want anyone to interfere with their illusory ability to make S’more of their lives. We need to show them that the new-age god found within likes to play with fire and cares little if it scorches a life, but the one true God offers the controlled burn of the Holy Spirit to warm our hearts. Our culture thinks freedom is found in dismantling the scriptural fire alarm when in reality it is the only thing that prevents us from burning down the house.
