One of the failings of modern Christianity has been its inability to recognize new cultural trends and proactively form appropriate apologetic responses.
Most recently, our obsession with debating modernists has left us deaf to the song of the postmodern pied piper luring our children away. Unfortunately, while we argued with our atheist friends, our youth began tapping their feet to another tune. Summit Ministries and the Barna Group recently found that the greater threat to Christianity is not atheism but rather postmodernism and the new spirituality (1). We, therefore, need to take off our philosophical caps and gowns, put on our music critic hats and jeans, and explain to our children that the postmodern siren song makes for a poor life soundtrack.
The postmodern horse has left the barn and doesn’t seem interested in returning anytime soon. We can fantasize about capturing it, placing a logical halter on its head, and redirecting it back home, but we need to face the reality that we now have a barn full of postmodern poop. We have a choice; hold our noses at the stench or transform it into fertilizer for the Gospel.
In my most recent book, God Spoke, I present a postmodern apologetic approach to get others to understand the Christian worldview that utilizes experiences common to all people as a way to build a bridge between the sacred and secular. Check it out!
