God created the heavens and the earth and declared it a very good place to live. Adam and Eve then rejected His rule and were expelled into the wilderness. God’s children filed for separation because they confused slavery to sin with being emancipated minors. The Holy playground that God had created became an unholy crime scene. God’s daily walks were transformed into a once-a-year sacrificially supervised…..
I listen to a lot of Christian radio and I am struck by how much gun rights and vitamins have become associated with our faith. Scattered amongst the sermons and talk shows are programs promoting health supplements and second amendment rights. While both of these issues are important, they do not define Christianity. Sadly, the secular world lumps all these things together and unfairly creates a Christian stereotype that doesn’t match the Jesus found in Scripture. Our faith should not be defined by the number of firearms in our gun…..
You are alive! The very fact that you are reading this blog means you are a living, breathing human being. I think we all too often view our existence as life + X and miss the quite astonishing fact that before all of our cultural accessorizing, we are alive. We get so distracted acquiring things that we think will make us happy that we fail to…..
If we want to reach our postmodern youth then we need to change our evangelistic approach. The rarefied air of traditional apologetics has left our young people divinely light-headed, therefore, we must bring them back to earth to regain their balance and then teach them to dig around in the dirt of common experience to find hidden heavenly treasure. In my previous blogs, we soiled our knees by…..
Postmodernism arose as a reaction to the modernist claims that absolute truth was found only through science and that the spiritual realm didn’t exist. Postmodernism responded by establishing personal experience as the yardstick of reality and adopting the new spirituality as the way to reclaim the transcendent. Our youth have embraced this worldview because they know life is more than natural laws and religious legalisms, randomized controlled experiments and canon law. They have become what Pew refers to as the, “nones,” a group…..
The Barna Group and Summit Ministries recently released a study that investigated the influence of various worldviews on Christianity. While we tend to think of atheism as the biggest threat, they found that postmodernism and the new spirituality have actually had a greater impact. As I mentioned in my last blog, Christianity has become overly reliant on a modernist, enlightenment apologetic and neglected the unique…..
The Christian church is under constant cultural attack while every other religious persuasion is given a free pass. We feel like we have been good citizens, yet the villagers relentlessly come at us with torches and pitchforks. While others are allowed to meditate, pray and worship, we are told to scold our deity and make Him sit in the corner with an “Unknown God” sign around His neck. Despite all this hostility…..
While Christianity has many critics their complaints are rarely if ever directed at Jesus. They blame the Christian machine and those who call themselves followers of Christ, but feel compelled to claim Jesus as their own. While they may deny that Jesus is the only way they seem convinced that He needs to have at least a little skin in…..
Many Christians get so frustrated by their inability to distribute truth in the cultural marketplace that they move to the “Little Christianity” section of town where everyone speaks the same language and they end up preaching to the choir. Other Christians continue to try and import their faith into the world but quickly find the cultural tariffs too high a…..
Christians are engaged in a cultural worldview battle. Our two most prominent adversaries are the philosophical forces of modernism and postmodernism. Modernism, assembles its atheistic forces and engages the Bible and its adherents in conventional warfare. These skirmishes are often conducted in college auditoriums where the generals of each side spar in a war of words. Postmodernism, on the…..
