We humans have a notorious knack for minimizing our faults. We know we should behave better than we do but rather than appealing to a higher standard we use our fellow-man as a yardstick. Acutely aware of our own faults we temper our disappointment by scrutinizing the behavior of our neighbor and concluding we aren’t so bad…..
One of the main reasons young people leave the church is because doubt is demonized and questions are discouraged. Instead of filling a sincere intellectual hole with Holy cement the church puts hazard tape around it and warns young people to not get too close. Do we think that God is that fragile? Are we afraid that…..
The Intelligent Design (ID) movement is often portrayed as a religious Trojan Horse, a faux scientific steed hiding a band of religious fanatics trying to get a divine foot in the laboratory door.
Evolutionists … have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to…..
It is becoming clear that in order for us to reach our young people we need to make apologetics more relational. The old way of lecturing and preaching left no time for an extended question and answer period. Well intentioned teachers would walk away from the podium thinking that they had just imparted the wisdom of God when in reality…..
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us …
Paul compares our faith journey to a foot race run in a stadium surrounded by a cheering throng of our biggest…..
We all have a worldview home. A safe space where we go to be protected from the thorns and thistles. A domicile built with sweat and tears. Most of us, however, have been oblivious to the emotional, intellectual, and societal subcontractors who have snuck in and engaged in unsolicited renovations. Sadly, our lack of architectural awareness has resulted in an…..
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I…..
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only… (James 1: 22)
One of the more controversial issues in the church is the faith versus works debate. I believe the book of James is quite helpful in this regard because it points out that our salvation should be evident by the way our faith…..
Many of you are familiar with the Disneyland ride, Pirates of the Caribbean. The ride begins with a leisurely float through a calm blue bayou only to be interrupted by a talking skull who warns you of the perilous journey ahead and concludes with the haunting benediction that dead men tell no tales. I would argue that the book of…..
I listen to a lot of Christian radio and I am struck by how much gun rights and vitamins have become associated with our faith. Scattered amongst the sermons and talk shows are programs promoting health supplements and second amendment rights. While both of these issues are important, they do not define Christianity. Sadly, the secular world lumps all these things together and unfairly creates a Christian stereotype that doesn’t match the Jesus found in Scripture. Our faith should not be defined by the number of firearms in our gun…..
