We Christians are frequently attacked for our beliefs, but instead of shrinking away from the criticism we need to embrace the challenge. The fact we have been singled out in this debate is the ultimate compliment. It implies that our beliefs have serious implications, not just for us personally, but also for the world in general. Ask yourself why it is that Christianity is being assaulted and yet New Age religion is given a free pass. Why are there efforts to remove the Ten Commandments from courthouses, but New Age gurus are used to generate money for public broadcasting? The “religion police” know the New Age movement doesn’t pose a threat to anybody because it’s theologically empty, optional, and ultimately irrelevant to the culture in which it’s allowed to exist. You could argue that New Age religion has exerted significantly more influence on our culture than has traditional religion, so why don’t atheists spill more ink on these movements? Simply put, atheists are too smart a bunch to waste their time engaging a movement devoid of any intellectual substance or consequence. Jesus warned us about the frigid reception we would receive so instead of trying to warm up to the cultural fire we should put on our parkas and be diligent ice-fishers of men.
