Words are powerful. They cut, they cure; they lift up, they put down; they bring life, and they sentence to death.
The universe began with words; And God said…
Whenever we encounter a babbling brook we are eavesdropping on a stream of divine thought.
God gave us creational words, His scriptural Word, and His only begotten WORD.
Language connects the physical world to the mind of God.
We know when God is speaking because the sheep know the shepherd’s voice.
Interestingly, the original sin of trying to be like God raises its ugly head as our postmodern culture tries to create an alternate reality with words. Instead of bending their ears to listen to what God has spoken, they take the words out of His mouth and create a rhetorical mess. Unable to change the world in which they live, they appropriate language and use it to create a reality to their own liking. Words like love, tolerance, gender, morality, hate, and truth all get a postmodern make-over and God’s grammatical masterpiece is rendered illegible by the inappropriate use of sinful syntax.
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. (James 3: 7-10)
