Tolerance is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It looks like a little lamb gently chewing its cultural cud, but in reality is a voracious beast intent on devouring every rule it finds oppressive, even when those rules are the only safeguards for a peaceful pasture. Its hunger will not be sated until every “freedom limiting” pillar of society is butchered and barbecued. As long as there is a law, there will always be someone who feels that they have been marginalized. Ironically, once tolerance has finished gorging on every rule, law, and guideline there will be no place for the oppressed to hide, because the beast will have already eaten every available safe haven. Sadly, you can’t cry, “foul” when the intolerant “out of bounds” markers have been devoured. Things, however, are changing, and those who had kept the tolerance beast as a pet are finding that it is now biting the hand that fed it. They once used its fine wool to spin a coat of rainbow colors, but now find they have to chain it up in the backyard because it is beginning to attack their children whose only act of intolerance was dressing up as the Frito Bandito for Halloween. If the tolerance beast continues to roam the landscape, not only will no one be safe, but also it will be a gray joyless place where you won’t even be able to laugh at yourself. Tolerance is heralded as the magical elixir that will transform all the frogs of this world into princes, but sadly ends up transforming us into tyrants ruling a generic kingdom.
